The World of Ikats

The multicultural nature of Indonesia has produced a rich civilisation. Among many cultural and artistic achievements the diverse textile traditions stand out. Ikat fabric has been classified by UNESCO as an intangible world heritage.Yet these traditions are vulnerable and are in danger of dying due to the fragile lands, remote areas an

Ikat meaning to “bind” or “tie” is a resist-dyeing technique whereby the pattern of the finished fabric is determined by the dying of the threads before they are woven. There are over 52 steps to make an Ikat textile each taking up to a year to make.

It is a great honour to bring you access to the rich and complex world of “Ikat tenun” with our purpose-driven work celebrating and supporting men and women in remote indigenous communities whilst preserving these ancient traditional crafts.  We buy the textiles directly from the communities at market price to ensure the proceeds go directly to the people, we then work the pieces in Bali with local tailors and donate 5% of each piece sold to the Sumba Foundation to ensure our give back funds are distributed into building a more sustainable and healthy future for the Sumba people and their future generations.

Each lotus flower button is hand carved my our Master Balinese carver Darma and set in recycled brass. The lotus flower has a sacred and close relationship within Balinese culture, they are the king of the flowers and is the flower of the goddess Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge which is shown across holy temples on the island of the Gods.

“At its heart, the traditional textile art articulates a set of values that place mutual support over personal profit, and respect for nature over exploitation. In the face of globalisation, the voice of these traditions becomes as valuable to us as it is to their custodians as we all seek a more sustainable future.”
